Here are 3 cover designs for a University brief which was to design 3 possible cover designs for a new issue of the typography based Emigre magazine, well known for pushing and exploring the boundaries of typography.

All 3 cover designs are based around typography.

No1 - This was printed onto brown paper which gave a nice classic look to the design, complimented by the image which was manipulated to look like an old black and white picture with the dots which were used for printing old pictures. I also created the thin styled font which was used for the title from scratch.

No2 - Very simple design, based on Helvetica, the cover just uses black and white and shoes the title in the negative space between the lines. The issue number at the bottom was separated by an enlarged asterisk which uses the font as a decorative matter.

No3 - This one was strongly influenced by the style of David Carson, a designer famous for his contribution to the grunge era, and who really caused a fuss in the design industry due to the way he rebelled against many traditional rules of graphic design. I love his edgy design style and the way he was influenced so much by surfing is something I can relate to with the way biking inspires alot of my work.

Desktop background I made up with an image I took of ink in water. 1280 x 800 screen resolution size. With really nice simple thin typography it has the quote:
“Every act of creation, is first of all an act of destruction”
Pablo Picasso

University Brief, inspired by the story of the discovery of some preserved crates of whisky left behind by Shackleton under one of his huts which he used on one of his expeditions. I created the brand ” Shackleton” with the name of the whisky being “40%” My aim target market was high class young professionals, which enjoy a social drink to relax. Some keywords to sum up the target market are; Cool, expensive, laid back.

Above you can see the outer package design, made from matte finish card, with a white matte card band around the middle.

Also, above is the bottle design I created with the continuing brand of black and white, with the label around the middle.

And finally a special edition wooden case I designed for a limited run which would include a letter about the brand history, tasting notes and straw and brown paper packaging, which represents the history behind the brand and how the discovered bottles of whisky were found, but reinterpreted in a modern way to match the brand.

Abit about me: I’m a Graphic Designer currently in my second year at Huddersfield University. I created this blog because I felt all my work was beggining to look too commercial so I created this blog as a outlet for all my creativity, abit like a online sketchbook.
